Finding Inner Strength

Inner Strength can be defined as Integrity of character; resoluteness of will; mental resistance to doubt or discouragement. Confidence or power that comes from inside oneself.

1 Samuel 30:6-6 – David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.

WHY Do We Need Inner Strength?

We need inner strength because in this world we will have troubles.  John 16:33 tells us that –

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Another reason we need inner strength is because Everyone’s strength gets weak at some point. Isaiah 40:30-31 tells us that –

30Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.

When we don’t have inner strength, we become victims of circumstance: See John 5:1-9 –

1Sometime later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” 8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,

EXAMPLE OF PEOPLE WITH INNER STRENGTH IN THE BIBLE:

1. David:

1 Samuel 30:18-19 – 18 David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken, including his two wives. 19Nothing was missing: young or old, boy or girl, plunder or anything else they had taken. David brought everything back.

2. Job:

Job 19:25 – I know that my redeemer[c] lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.

HOW do we get Inner Strength?

finding inner strength

1. One of the ways we get inner strength is by waiting upon the Lord. (Isaiah 40:30-3)

2. Following God with all your heart gives you inner strength.

See Joshua 14:6-15Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, 8 but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly. So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’ 10 “Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! 11 I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

3. You should refuse to be comforted with less than your portion.

1 Samuel 1:1-159 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house. 10 In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.” 12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.” 15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.” 17 Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.” Jeremiah 31:15

What happens when you have Inner Strength:

  1. You will possess your promise Joshua 14:6-15
  2. No one will steal what is yours 1 Samuel 30:18-19

PRAYERS:

Pray that Jesus will help you find inner strength in your time of need. 1 Samuel 30:6
